John Carmack is leaving Meta
John Carmack, brilliant computer programmer and co-founder of id Software, known for his work on classic games like Wolfenstein 3D and Quake, in addition to his contributions to virtual reality, announced today that he is leaving his role at Meta.
Carmack joined Oculus back in 2013 as CTO before the company was acquired by Meta (then known as Facebook) in 2014. He would then reduce his role at the company just five years later to a new consulting CTO role to focus more on his new startup. me, Keen technologywhere he is focusing on artificial intelligence in general.
Carmack says in a Facebook post detailing the reason for his resignation at Meta. “There’s no way to hide this; I think our organization is running at half efficiency which would make me happy.”
Based on Carmack parcel and tweets, he seems unhappy with the way things are going at Meta. Note in a tweet that he’s always been “quite frustrated with the way things are done at FB/Meta”, a company Burn money into its Reality Labs division because it prioritizes creating VR headsets and software designed for the metaverse.
Even before leaving, Carmack expressed displeasure over the current direction of Meta. Most recently, in October, after the Meta Connect event, where he noted that there was “a bunch [he’s] grumpy about” regarding Meta’s current VR outings. He expressed frustration with things like mission 2which he feels doesn’t offer a good user experience due to frequent updates and is not a fan of the company’s newest (and expensive) VR headset, professional duty.
