Via Allan Fox: Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman spoke out on Thursday in response to all the criticism he’s received for his return after two and a half years of sitting still.
To my surprise, Thurman said he liked the criticism he received from fans and the media. However, it’s hard to believe in him, as he gave his all today because of the criticism he is receiving.
Thurman will face Mario Barrios on March 5 on FOX PPV at Michelob Ultra Arena, Las Vegas. Everyone believes Thurman is on the hill and since he last returned in 2019 after being absent for two years.
Thurman looked bad during his loss to Manny Pacquiao and had problems with competitor Josesito Lopez. The way Thurman wrestled with Josesito in 2019 shows that he has lost a lot from his bout against the boxer he had been in in 2016.
Why is Thurman back?
Fans don’t see this as a pay-per-view fight; that’s one of the things Thurman defended on Thursday. He said the reason why the PPV battle card is that the boxer “accumulates damage.”
Boxing fans don’t consider the fight and the card itself worthy of PPV, especially when Thurman picked 140-pounder Barrios (26-1.17 KOs) after losing directly to Gervonta Davis.
Former WBA/WBC welterweight champion Thurman (29-1, 22 KOs) says he’s back to reclaim his No. 1 spot as the best welterweight in the world, but the Critics claim that his hidden agenda is replenishing his bank account.
Rumor is Thurman needs money, which motivated him to eventually step out of his chair, lose weight, and get a big payday ahead of Terence Crawford or Errol Spence Jr.
To get the money fight he needs, Thurman must defeat Barrios. If he can’t do that, he won’t get his hands on the millions he would have won against Errol or Bud Crawford.
However, it is still up for debate whether Thurman defeated Barrios or not, because this is not a body thrown into the ring for an introductory level battle.
Considering this was on FOX PPV, Thurman’s management had to find someone with enough talent and name to help sell the fight.
Keith says he’s “NOT done”
“Thurman is not done. For all of you who think Thurman is done, I’m not done yet. I’m 33 years old,” Thurman told the top boxing champions. “I don’t have an extra 33 years in me, but I have a lot of better years inside of me. I will put it, blood, sweat and tears in the ring.
“It all started this year, 2022, on February 5. Mario Barrios, let’s go,” Thurman said.
Technically, Thurman wasn’t made as a warrior. He only had one loss, and that was against Pacquiao. But if you question whether Thurman has the potential to retake another world title, he’s done.
At this point in Thurman’s career, he won’t win another title because he’s been out of the ring for so long.
I’m not sure I’m talking about his most recent 31-month layoff. I’m also referring to Thurman’s two years out of the ring from 2017 to 2019. With his inactivity since 2017, Thurman has missed four of the past five years.
That’s too much time Thurman has missed for him to finish as a boxer. There’s no way Thurman can win the title unless he’s given one of WBC’s jeweled belts like their Franchise strap.
Thurman appreciates the doubters
“People can say what they want about Keith Thurman. Unless you know something about me, you don’t know anything about me,” Thurman said angrily in response to fans doubting his ability to make a comeback.
