Mercedes-Benz EV concept exceeds a range of 1100 km per charge

Progressive Mercedes-Benz EQXX car model Shown at CES in early 2022 promised four-figure range and record low power consumption.

Although the EQXX is not a production car, Mercedes-Benz has put it through a certified real-world endurance test on a single charge at speeds up to 140km/h.

The trip from Sindelfingen, across the Swiss Alps and Northern Italy, to Cassis on the Côte d’Azur, is over 1000 km long, but the EQXX has arrived with 15% of the range remaining – or about 140 km.

This means an average energy use of just 8.7kWh per 100km.

“The journey begins in cold and rainy conditions, and is carried out at normal road speeds, including extended fast lane travel at up to 140 km/h in self-driving cars. German driving force and near the speed limit elsewhere,” Mercedes-Benz stated.

The drive is made with a sealed charging socket and comes with an independent display from the TÜV Süd certification body.

“The Vision EQXX is the most efficient Mercedes ever built. The technology program behind it marks an important milestone in the development of electric vehicles. It underlies our strategic objective of ‘Leadership in the field of electricity’,” said the famous Mercedes-Benz Group AG Chairman. Ola Källenius.

Waterdrop-shaped, air-friendly (its drag coefficient is ridiculously low at 0.17). The Mercedes-Benz EQXX show car has all kinds of concept features, such as:

• The rear diffuser works and the wheels cut down on drag
• Newly developed Bridgestone tire with super low rolling resistance rating
• Lightweight materials such as an F1-style carbon fiber-road mix and die-cast aluminum, to keep curb weight at 1755kg (light for an EV)
• Large capacity 100kWh battery that is 50% smaller and 30% lighter than that used in touring Mercedes-Benz EQS limo
• Enhanced energy recovery works on any slope as well as when braking
• A solar roof with 117 cells and a 12V battery provides ancillary electronics and as a result can increase driving range by 25km
• A compact and efficient 180kW electric drive unit produced with the help of the Mercedes-AMG F1 team, with an efficiency rate of 95%
• Rely more on passive cooling if possible
• An effective assistant mode built into driver assistance features

While the EQXX is just a concept car, Mercedes-Benz board members develop Markus Schäfer states, “many innovative developments have been incorporated into production, some of them within the next generation of modular architecture for the midsize and compact Mercedes ‑ Benz”.
