MS Dhoni shocked the cricket world on 30 December 2014 when, at the end of the Boxing Day draw against Australia in Melbourne, he announced his retirement from the game’s longest format. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri, who is India’s team director at the moment, recalled the moment on Sunday and revealed that no one in the team knew about Dhoni’s decision before he “accidentally” informed them of the same thing after the game. .
Speaking on Star Sports, Shastri said that Dhoni decided to retire after learning that Virat Kohli was ready to take on the duties of captaincy.
“He knows who is the next leader in the line. He was just waiting for the right moment to make that announcement because he knew how much percentage his body could lose. He wants to prolong his white football career. When his body tells him enough is enough. No second thoughts with MS,” says Shastri.

“It was a big surprise in Melbourne when he said ‘I’m finishing Test cricket’. In fact, he just happened to walk up to me and say, ‘Ravi bhai, I need to talk to the boys’. I say ‘definitely’. So I thought he would say something; we drew a great match, beat the day before. To draw that match is a huge thing.
“And he came out, saying clearly, ‘I’ve finished Test cricket’. And I just see faces around the dressing room, they’re in shock, most of them are. But that’s MS for you,” recalls Shastri.
