SNL’s First Nonbinary Cast Member Molly Kearney Goes to Bat for Trans Kids
Saturday Night Live the cast of Molly Kearney descended — literally — into the guest seats of Saturday’s Weekend Update, where they protested many anti-transgender bills being considered in Republican state legislatures. peace.
Kearney, who was tied in a harness as they walked down the set, immediately leaned over: “I’ve been hanged by my genitals for so long and I’m starting to feel like a legislator of the Republican Party— HELLO!”
They have criticized Republican efforts to limit gender-based care for transgender children across the country, saying efforts to prevent such access are harming children.
They said: “For some reason, there’s something about the word ‘transgender’ that makes people forget the word ‘children’. “If you don’t care about the lives of transgender children, that means you don’t care about the lives of eccentric kids.”
Kearney continues to use their harness to switch between jokes, noting that certain phrases are “code words” to elevate them. After those words were used—“pick them up”—Kearney was lifted back up to the ceiling, where they sent a poignant message to the kids who might be watching.
“What is happening, children, is wrong, and you need not be afraid,” Kearney said. “Our job is to protect you and your job is to focus on being a kid. It’s like I’m flying in the SNL sky: There’s a lot of guys asking you about your crotch and controlling when and where you’re allowed to pee, but if you keep going, you’ll look up and get out: You’re flying, kid!”
Kearney is announced as SNLthe first non-binary cast in September alongside newcomers Michael Longfellow, Devon Walker and Marcello Hernandez.
