The Forgotten Concept: Ford Probe III | Daily driving | Consumer Guide® The Daily Drive
This is part of a series of articles looking back at the cars on show that we feel deserve a little more attention than they really are. If you have suggestions for the Forgotten Concepts theme, feel free to drop us a line or leave a comment below.
Model Ford Probe III
First shown: 1981 Frankfurt Motor Show
Description: Aerodynamic test car model
Yard: “A Future Study of Aerodynamics”
Details:
First seen at the 1981 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Ford Probe III Concept was both an experimental aerodynamic exercise and a foreshadowing of upcoming Fords. The midsize sedan stands out with its rounded, sleek styling and several aerodynamic aids that contribute to the concept’s remarkably low drag coefficient. Notable aerodynamic elements include a smooth side skirt, body water outlets, rear fenders and carefully tweaked exterior mirrors.
The four-door Probe III accurately predicted the look of the new Ford Sierra sports coupe for 1982. The Sierra, featuring the Probe III’s “double decker” rear spoiler, will be sold in the US through dealerships. Mercury as Merkur XR4Ti.
Reported by Ford as 0.22 and 0.24, the Probe III’s drag coefficient is significantly lower than the 0.34 of the all-new 1984 Chevrolet Corvette. According to Ford, the Probe III’s aerodynamic design alone would improve fuel economy by 27% compared to an average European car on the road at the time.
The Forgotten Concept: Mercury XM
CG says:
I like forgotten concept cars that when viewed closely conjure up images of cars that were once produced. In the case of the Probe III, we see not only the supposedly handsome Sierra in the European market, but also the game-changing 1986 Ford Taurus.
As evidenced by the magazine advertisement seen below, Ford was keen for the Americans to embrace its aerodynamic achievements alongside the Europeans. Given how well the Taurus is selling, it seems that American consumers appreciate the effort.
