Via Charles Brun: The World Boxing Council has ordered WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury to face interim champion Dillian Whyte next. It is now in the negotiation phase between the two sides with a payoff if they cannot reach an agreement.
WBC’s today’s announcement of the start of negotiations between Fury and Whyte is sure to make Boxing Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn VERY happy he’s given his all.
Ole Hearn must be happy right now, jump for joy at the prospect of getting a potential two-for-one deal with Whyte getting his first crack at Fury.
Even if Fury destroys Whyte, Anthony Joshua could still face the ‘King of Gypsy’ in 2022, provided he defeats Oleksander Usyk.
It’s unclear if Fury was overjoyed when he heard he was ordered to face Whyte (28-2, 19 KOs). I mean, the way Fury said it on Monday, he seemed apathetic about the possibility of being ordered to face Whyte, say this to iFL TV:
Fury said: “I’m going to fight Dillian Whyte when the hat falls off. “It has nothing to do with ‘Tyson won’t fight.’ He is mandatory for 200 million days, but he is not mandatory for me once… When they [WBC] make him my obligatory challenger, i will defend my belt and kill him. He’s not a must-have for me because if I were, I’d fight him,” Fury said of Whyte.
Fury’s comments may have accidentally caused the WBC to trigger the fight with Whyte because he made it clear to them that he has no problem defending against him.
If Fury was negative about the idea of fighting Whyte, it wouldn’t surprise Charles Brun if the WBC kept Dillian, patting the wind in anticipation of a fight that would never happen.
Despite the WBC ordering the fight, there’s still a chance the Fury – Whyte fight will NOT happen.
Possible issues that could prevent a Fury vs. Whyte happens:
- Skip the deal for Anthony Joshua to allow Fury to take on IBF/WBA/WBO champ Oleksander Usyk
- WBC title vacated by Fury
- Top ranked requires an exception from WBC to allow Fury to face another opponent
- Fury or Whyte is injured
The moment Fury had to fight Whyte was CRISIS as it came shortly after Dillian bailed out in his October 30 fight with Otto Wallin.
Did the WILLED Whyte make it through the training camp?
Fury better hope that Whyte’s injured shoulder heals quickly as he can’t spend the whole of 2022 waiting for Dillian to be fit enough to fight him.
Shoulder injuries tend to persist with age, and Fury doesn’t have much time to wait for Whyte to be healthy enough to fight.
Dillian pulled out of the fight against Otto due to his left shoulder injury, but fans in the boxing public believe he DIDN’T let that go when he learned that the WBC would order Fury to fight him.
So they think Whyte is uninjured and just want to avoid risking another loss because he was cooled down by Alexander Povetkin last year.
In the face of many boxing fans’ suspicions about Whyte and his shoulder injury, they consider it 100% distrust of a world championship hit against Fury.
