Battlefield 2042’s major update dropped earlier today, which adds things like VoIP communications, more scoreboards, and some much-needed equalization. I’ve been playing the game all day to see what difference it has made and… everything is better.
Of course that’s a very low level to clear with this game, was released in such a bad state that longtime fans abandoned it in droves. The thing is, as I explained in that review, there are still some very interesting things to be found in the game, it only appeals to one kind of person. Battlefield the player and/or someone else can look through the obvious unfinished parts of the game and focus on the pieces that have been put together well enough to work.
Whichever way you look at it though the game needs updating, lousy, and although it has had a few minor bugs (like adding a scoreboard and fixing some bugs), the most recent is the first play itself, its moment of action -moment, has felt even slightly different. Of course, VoIP is already a huge help, especially in terms of helping teams work together (an integral part of the game’s design, as teammates can respawn and spawn on each other but previously couldn’t) communicate), but other little things like moving certain classes of vehicles around (resulting in fewer Blackbirds now, a blessing) and the new car care system are also improvements.
However, the biggest and most important change — and as I’m typing this, I realize it’s ridiculous — is some basic information currently being made available on the server you’re about to join. At launch and in the last six months, join Battlefield 2042 The game involves being placed on a standby screen and just… waiting there, no information is provided as to how well you actually fill a server.
Is crazy! “WAIT FOR PLAYERS TO JOIN” makes no sense! We could be the only four players on the whole server, we could be four seconds before the start of a round, there’s no way to know, and everyone would just give up because of the uncertainty! Now the player is told how many open points are left in the server and then how many seconds until the round starts, and Later play a round with the narration intro/scenes removed to get you in the game faster.
It’s a small thing, but it makes a huge difference in quality of life for people who take this game seriously (and yes, we are out there). However, while it is very much welcomed, it also represents how bad things have happened Battlefield 2042 that this massive update that fixes a lot of these things didn’t “save” the game, instead it just made it “less catastrophic”, because of many of the game’s broader issues — the original version. limited map, experts, similar factions — months if not years to be fixed, if at all.
But hey, be one of those idiots who still play and enjoy this game every day despite all, any and all steps in the right direction are welcome! If you want to see how many small changes have been made to the big stuff, this video has a good summary:
