Dr. Andrew Huberman’s Ice Bath Tips & Recipes:
♡ use it to protect you from stress.
To better cope with stress, you can work to increase your stress threshold. An ice bath helps keep your mind and body in check, but by breathing, realizing you WILL feel agitated and trying to push through (to a safe limit) will increase your adrenaline levels. Your body will become more relaxed as adrenaline ramps up (hello fight or flight!) and you’ll be able to handle sudden, stressful situations much better. Like, there’s a reason they use cold exposure in special forces, guys.
♡ cold TB early in the day.
“Why? Because it gives you a dose of adrenaline and when you’re in the cold, yes, your body temperature drops, but when you’re out, your metabolism goes up because body temperature increases.
An increase in body temperature causes you to wake up. Sauna, or any kind of hot environment, is the opposite. So even 20 seconds at very cold temperatures, or 20 minutes at moderately cool temperatures, causes large increases in epinephrine, adrenaline, and dopamine that last several hours. So improve alertness and mood. This is a healthy increase in dopamine and epinephrine and in metabolism. “
♡ easy on it.
Start slow, challenge yourself, but don’t get hypothermic.
Lauryn’s hot tip: started with some freezing cold showers. Just 1 minute can be really beneficial.
♡ feel comfortable with the cold, but not too comfortable.
“You really don’t want to acclimatize too much because then you won’t get the benefits. You will still get some benefit, but not too much. So pain is a good thing, as long as it doesn’t harm you.”
♡ ends with a cold note.
If you’re doing hot/cold therapy, you’ll probably want to end up with a sauna. Try to end with COLD. This allows your body to warm up naturally which will stimulate your metabolism.
