Ghostbusters: Afterlife – now in theaters worldwide – serves as a direct sequel to the original Ghostbusters film from 1984 and (thankfully) a forgotten 1989 sequel by Ghostbusters II. It brought Bill Murray and Co. returns for a limited time, though mostly about the new generation of ghost movies. This is not the first time. We rebooted an entire female-led film in 2016 that didn’t fare well with critics or audiences. Ghostbusters: Afterlife completely ignores its characters and story, shifting the focus to one original member’s family in a small American town. That said, it retains a tradition of the 2016 reboot: the post-credits scene. In fact, there are two of them. To be fair, post-credits scenes are a Marvel tradition at this point, so credit it where it’s due.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife ending, explained
The new one Ghostbusters the film ends as it begins, at the Summerville ranch that Callie Spengler (Carrie Coon) moves in with her two children, Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace). With the help of the ghost Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), and the original gang – Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) – they managed to stop the villain. Gozer itself (Wildlands).

After the fight, the crew initially shared the words with the ghost of Egon (who never spoke, I assume a limitation due to the fact that they used archival footage of Ramis, who passed away. in 2014). Ray apologizes for not believing him, Winston says he will do good to his friend, and Venkman just nods. Egon then turns to face his estranged daughter Callie, who runs up to him and hugs him. Trevor and Phoebe share an emotional goodbye, before Egon’s soul flies away.
As the camera pans back and forth, Ghostbusters: Afterlife closes with the words “For Harold”. It then jumps to New York City, where we see the Ecto-1 being driven into the city. Winston promises that he will take care of it, which explains why the car is being recovered.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s mid-credits scene, explained
The mid-credits scene of the new Ghostbusters movie appears after the names of the main actors have been printed in large letters. The last name is Sigourney Weaver, which is very odd to those who are new to Ghostbusters: Afterlife because the actress is not present in the film. Well, not yet anyway. The Ghostbusters: Afterlife mid-credits scene opens with Weaver’s face – she plays Venkman’s love interest Dana Barrett in the ’80s.
It looked like they were still together, with the wedding ring on Weaver’s finger. The mid-credits scene appears on the original Ghostbusters’ ESP machine test – a test Peter used with students at Columbia University. But this time, it was Dana who operated the machine, not Peter. She held up a card and asked him to guess the shape of the other side. After Peter got it right, she tried another one. He’s also right.
Dana wondered if Peter had marked the cards. He lied that he didn’t, but then after Dana snatched him up with the ESP, he admitted he had marked the cards. Dana then begins to shock him. To protect himself and gain some sympathy, Peter says he only shocks male students at Columbia, never shocks women. Dana then jerks him again, before the footage is cut. As you can tell, the mid-credits scene of Ghostbusters: Afterlife is really an extended joke.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife post-credits scene, explained
Unlike the mid-credits scene, the post-credits scene in the new Ghostbusters movie is all about business – as it tries to establish the future of the besieged franchise. It begins with a classic (deleted) scene from the original film, involving Egon (Ramis) and Janine Melnitz (Annie Potts) who gave him a coin – her lucky coin from 1964’s World’s Fair in New York – before he went up the building to save the world. Egon says no, but she insists that she has another one at home.
Then we cut until today with Janine admiring her lucky coin. Did she get it back from Egon after that? Or is this the second one? Anyhoo, the Ghostbusters: Afterlife post-credits scene shifts to the latter meeting Janine and Winston (Hudson) at the office. Winston talks about how he’s had a successful life – now a billionaire – thanks to the time he spent with the Ghostbusters. It was there that he discovered he had the talent to become better.
Winston later reveals that not only did he pay Egon’s bills, but he didn’t let their old fireplace headquarters be turned into a coffee shop, as Ray stated earlier in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The Ghostbusters: Afterlife post-credits scene cuts to the abandoned headquarters, where Winston is waiting for Ecto-1 to arrive, after making the journey back from Summerville to New York City. Winston says that he will always be a Ghostbuster.
As the vehicle rolls into the old Ghostbusters headquarters, the camera shifts to a red box on the wall: containment unit. A flashing red light is a natural harbinger, signaling that the light is about to explode. What does it mean? Well, that’s an obvious and obvious setup for another Ghostbusters sequel – and it looks like it will bring the franchise back into its home territory. Is it still relevant to the next generation of Spenglers? That depends on the box office of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, I would imagine.
