“I express my regret that he has to return. We respect our Prime Minister”
Punjab Prime Minister Charanjit Singh Channi made the remarks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s car was stuck on an overpass in Punjab for nearly 20 minutes. The Prime Minister expressed regret that the Prime Minister had to return.
“The Prime Minister’s motorcade was stopped in front of where the protesters were sitting. To put down any protest, it took at least 10-20 minutes. The Prime Minister was informed about it and also brought the another route, but he chose to go,” the minister at a press conference.
The Punjab minister made it clear that no officer will be suspended following today’s incident involving a security breach.
At 3pm today it was reported that the Prime Minister had abandoned his plans to attend a rally in Ferozpur. At the event, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced on stage that Mr. Modi would not be participating “for a number of reasons.”
In a political clash that escalated into election season, the BJP accused Punjab’s ruling Parliament of trying to harm the Prime Minister. However, Congress has raised the possibility of being invalidated by Prime Minister Modi’s elite security forces.
Prime Minister Modi is seen in a black Toyota Fortuner guarded by SPG officers. Just a few steps from his car, people and police were seen in clusters. Posters were held up as the Prime Minister’s car drove by. A BJP bus following the convoy was honked by protesters.
Prime Minister Modi cut short the visit and returned to the airport.
“The Prime Minister was stuck on the overpass for 15-20 minutes. This is a major shortcoming of the Prime Minister’s security,” the Home Office statement said.
