Via Jim Calfa: Caleb Plant said he’s not interested in a fight with undefeated, high-ranked 168-lb contender David Benavidez right now. Former IBF super-middleweight champion Plant (21-1, 12 KOs) says that when he tried to set up fights with Benavidez, he was brushed off by his promoter.
Although he has unsuccessfully fought together against WBC’s #1 ranked Benavidez in the past, Plant insists that he still wants to fight him in the future. Indeed, Plant believes he will have to face him at some point.
“I don’t know. I’ll let them figure it out. Right now, I’m just focused on me,” Caleb Plant told EsNews when asked his thoughts on a possible fight between Canelo Alvarez and Jermall Charlo.
“I’m at the gym, working and I’m focused on continuing my legacy, and I fell and my knee was scratched [knocked out by Canelo in the 11th round]but I got right back to it,” Plant continued.
Plant still seems shaken by the loss
It is important that Plant regains confidence because he looks shocked since losing to Canelo. Since that loss, Plant’s usual complacency has disappeared. Over the last few months, Plant has looked shaky and lethargic in interviews, as if he’d lost confidence in himself.
The only way Plant can regain his faith is for him to return to the ring and score a few victories under his own power, ideally against a trusted opposition.
It would be a bad idea if Plant were to fight in hopes of getting another payday match against Canelo because that won’t help build his already crumbling confidence.
With Benavidez’s popularity growing with each win, he could soon become a star at 168-lb, mostly if he can land a win over superstar Canelo Alvarez.
Benavidez could have been famous by now if Canelo had agreed to fight him a year or two ago because a win over him would have made him a household name.
Unfortunately, Canelo didn’t want to give Benavidez the fight he needed to become a star, which was a smart move for 5’8″ Alvarez.
If what boxing fans are saying is true about Benavidez being at fault with Canelo, he will damage his career by going up against the former two-time WBC super-middleweight champion.
Plant is making sure he’s not bridging Benavidez because the last thing he needs is to get off track of the weight division’s future star.
In his final bout, Plan lost the IBF title to Canelo Alvarez in November in an undisputed clash in Las Vegas. Plant gave Canelo a good hit for the first eight rounds but then lost his cool and was stopped in the eleventh round.

Plant says war with Benavidez “WILL happen”

Plant will have a chance against Benavidez at some point, as long as he rebuilds his career correctly after his loss to Canelo. PBC will need to move Plant carefully as he doesn’t have enough punch and tends to exhale after eight rounds where he’s vulnerable.
At Plant’s age, it doesn’t seem like his stamina and punching power will improve. You either have the strength and stamina at 29, or you don’t.

It will be interesting to see who Plant fights in his reconstruction over the summer. He would probably be paired with a lower-ranked contender, but a non-threatening type of fighter without more power.
