By Charles Brun: Devin Haney showed off his expensive assortment of jewelry to his shocked promoter Eddie Hearn following his victory over Joseph ‘Jojo’ Diaz Jr. last Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The look on Hearn’s face was priceless as if to say, ‘What on Earth are you doing buying all this junk.’
In Haney’s last two victories over Jojo Diaz and Jorge Linares, he was hurt and looked like a champion who won’t hold onto his WBC lightweight title for much longer.
Is Haney trying to impress fans by wearing a bunch of jewelry? If so, someone needs to set him aside and let him know that it’s a shallow approach to win over people by flashing jewelry. I’m just saying.
It makes Haney a target if he walks around with a goldmine around his neck and diamond watches on each wrist.
Devin WASTING money on jewelry
Haney is quickly accumulating a ton of bling with the riches he makes in his short reign as the WBC 135-lb champion.
With the gaudy diamond watches and heavy gold chains, WBC lightweight champion Haney (27-0, 15 KOs) looks more like a music artist than a boxer at this point.
His dad/trainer Bill Haney might want to talk some sense to him to stop wasting money on jewelry because he might be on skidrow soon if he gets beaten by undisputed lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr, Vasily Lomachenko, Ryan Garcia or Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero.
The more Haney, 23, wins his buying power for the expensive jewelry increases. Hopefully, the bottom doesn’t drop out on Haney’s career because when he tries to sell back the bling, he might be shocked with how little he gets for it.
Reselling that stuff is difficult, which is why you don’t want to buy jewelry in the first place. Haney is better off investing his money by buying real estate.
Leonard Ellerbe rips Devin Haney
“Devin and Bill are doing a good job but they’re fighting on a platform that no one f**** watches and that’s one of the reasons why it’s taken time to build his profile because people don’t even know who he is like that other than the diehard fans,” said Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe to Fighthype.
“It’s no fault of Devin Haney because again, I think he’s a terrific fighter,” said Ellerbe.”But for an example, as a promoter, you plan a fight, and I think they changed the date, but you bring a fight to Las Vegas in a bigger venue than you had last time and you sold half the house the last time you was in Vegas in a small venue.
“Then you moved to a bigger venue, and I know why because they couldn’t get no other venue,” said Ellerbe about Haney. “Devin, he has support, but he’s at a disadvantage because they plan a fight on the same day and same time as [comedian] Martin Lawrence. Does that make any sense?
“Devin’s core audience, all the people I know, are going to the comedy show because they’ve been waiting to see Martin Lawrence,” said Ellerbe.
It sounds bad that Haney’s promoter Eddie Hearn booked a venue too big for his fight last Saturday night against Joseph Diaz. For a venue the size of the one Hearn booked, Haney needed to be fighting an elite lightweight like Vasily Lomachenko, Teofimo Lopez, or Ryan Garcia rather than a washed-up Jojo Diaz.
