“We have all the confidence in the world in Smitty and he’s had a return game like no other,” added Oilers forward Derek Ryan.

“We were patient. We are not trying to force anything. We were just waiting for opportunities to open up and when they did, we made the most of them,” said Nurse Darnell, who protected Edmonton.
“It’s a good team that we’re playing there in LA that don’t give up a lot, so when the opportunities arise, we have to make the most of them.”
The Oilers found themselves out of breath twice in the first period on the penalty spot to Connor McDavid and Duncan Keith. Alex Iafallo has the best chance of getting his hands on the post.

In the first minute of the second, Kings striker Andreas Athanasiou fouled keeper Smith by fouling the keeper. In the ensuing play of power, Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl tore through Kings goalkeeper Jonathan Quick in a strike.

“If he keeps it simple, he can make some incredible plays, and he’s got a bomb attack.”
“It’s a game. There’s still a lot of hockey to play in this series, but it’s a game we can build on,” Nurse said. “Now we go to LA and reset and get ready for the sequel.”
