Wizards of the Coast cancels five unannounced games as it focuses on growing ‘Existing Brands’
According to a new report by Bloomberg.
While it’s unclear which games have been canceled, Wizards of the Coast claims that less than 15 people at the company have been affected by these changes. The company told IGN in a statement:
We remain committed to using digital gaming as the cornerstone of our strategy to bring games to players around the world. We’ve made some changes to our long-term portfolio to focus on games that are strategically aligned with growing our existing brands and those that promise expansion. or engage our audience in new ways.
Hidden Path Entertainment and OtherSide Entertainment, both of which are working on games for Wizards of the Coast, are among the studios likely to be affected by the cancellation.
The cancellation follows an ambitious expansion plan in 2022, in which the company has opened many new studios. These include Skeleton Key, an Austin-based studio run by Christian Dailey, a former BioWare developer, and Invoke Games, a Montreal-based studio hosted by the developers of BioWare. Baldur’s Gate 2021: Dark Alliance.
In addition to opening Invoke Games and Skeleton Key, Wizards of the Coast is publishing Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3. It also has several other games in the works, including a sci-fi role-playing game by former BioWare developer James Ohlen and an Atomic Arcade game starring GI Joe’s Snake Eyes.
In making its way into the digital space, Wizards of the Coast achieved success with Magic: The Gathering Arena, but it Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow Alliance Tuque Games’ revival has been criticized by fans as well as critics. Likewise, Hasbro saw its stock plummet late last year due to its handling of Magic: The Gathering, which included Expensive 30th Anniversary Edition caused a wave of outrage among fans.
Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast will be hoping for a better reception for Baldur’s Gate 3is expected to be fully released in August.
